New Openings on Bree Street, in Cape Town

Culture Club Cheese

That Cape Town's Bree Street has been thriving of late is hardly a secret—we covered the area's revival last year. But with buzzy openings seemingly every week, it's always worth checking in to see what's new. Here are some of the most exciting eateries to set up shop on Bree Street in recent months.

Bacon on Bree

April was a busy month for Bree: next door to Culture Club (see below), this temple to bacon opened its door around the same time behind a considerably more somber exterior to its neighbor. Bacon lovers rejoiced at Richard Bosman's pork-heavy menu: The Yank (croissant, bacon, macadamia nut honey butter), The Rooster (Kaiser roll, bacon, fried egg, chili garlic sauce), and Le Coq Sportif (confit crispy chicken wings with umami bacon wing sauce), to name a few.

Culture Club Cheese

You can't miss this pint-size cheese emporium (pictured), thanks to its cheerful (though some might say garish) yellow façade. Since April, husband-and-wife team Luke Williams and Jessica Merton have been selling top South African cheeses, along with a menu that showcases them to the fullest: toasties with unpasteurized Myst Hill cheddar, a cheese-and-ham sandwich with De Pekelaar cumin gouda, and a toasted bagel with De Pekelaar Boerenkaas, Ganzvlei Blue Moon, and chorizo.

Door 221

Having just opened a few weeks ago, Door 221 is the newest kid on the block—for now, anyway (we wouldn't be surprised if something else set up shop as we typed this). The intimate, industrial-chic spot offers a select list of cocktails creative bar food, and it’s already a hot favorite for its Taco Tuesdays.

Inside and You're Out Burger

While there are no points for originality here—the name is clearly a riff on the popular West Coast burger chain In-N-Out, while the logo seems lightly inspired by the East Coast's Shake Shack—this mobile burger bar popular at city markets opened its first brick-and-mortar outpost behind a bright orange door on Bree this past spring, making their famous Whiskey Braai-BQ, Pickle Pulled Piggy, and Brie Street burgers accessible all week long.
