Madrid’s Outdoor Summer Cinema Series Might Be the Best

Do you despise the deep freeze of summer movie theater air conditioning? Why not take your films outside at Madrid’s Urban Beach Cinema at the Conde Duque cultural center. Each night offers a different film series—science fiction, sing-along musicals, intergalactic battles, even a kids’ night (though, this being Spain, show time is still at 10 p.m.).

Featuring the best outdoor screening technology (a 300 m2 screen, a 4k image system and 5.1 surround sound, if you’re into that sort of thing) with capacity for 800 spectators, the screenings take over one massive patio of this sprawling and beautiful 18th-century former military barracks. This week’s films include feel-good favorites “Inside Out” and “Hairspray,” but there are several screenings a week through September 12.

Each theme has a dedicated night: Mondays are family cinema night, Tuesday are reserved for horror movies, Wednesdays feature new premieres, on Thursdays, films are accompanied by live music, Fridays are the beloved sing-along night, and over the weekend, there’s Sci-Fi Saturdays and on Sundays, cinema made by and starring women.

Even better, there are outdoor restaurants and a range of food trucks in the adjacent patio selling nibbles and adult beverages to help you feel even better. Tickets are $7 every day except Monday, when families can enjoy a reduced price of $2 for children under 10. Tickets for première day will cost $9.
