Last Tuesday, New York City's famous Stonewall Inn bar was unaminously granted landmark status by the New York City's Landmarks Preservation Commission. The bar is most well-known for its role in the LGBT movement as the location of the 1969 Stonewall riots where members of the gay community took a stand against local police forces during a raid. The act is considered to be one of events that kicked off the fight for LGBT rights.

Being deemed a landmark site means that the Stonewall Inn's exterior cannot be changed without approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. This announcement makes the bar the first landmark location in New York City to be granted the status solely for its contribution to the LGBT community. The news couldn't have come at a better time—the very first Pride Rally took place one month after the bar's raids and the tradition will continue this weekend with the 45th annual Pride celebration.
