Design aficionados, take note. The third NYCxDESIGN, or New York Design Week, kicks off today and boasts a whopping 400 events, from exhibitions to installations, talks and more, to celebrate the city’s diverse scene.

“Design has become an increasingly important touch point of the New York City visitor experience,” said Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYC & Company, one of the event’s hosts. Spread across all five boroughs, most NYCxDESIGN events are free and open to the public.

Highlights of this year’s program include Frieze (May 14-17), the contemporary art fair; BKLYN DESIGNS (May 8-10), focused on Brooklyn designers and artisans; and WantedDesign (May 15-19), which promotes an international design community.

New York City is home to some 40,000 designers, more than 3,900 design firms and 10 prominent architecture and design schools. “A century after the garment industry brought a generation of New Yorkers into the middle class, events like NYCxDESIGN help showcase how New York City remains the global capital of design,” said Kyle Kimball, President of NYCEDC, also a host of the event, which runs until May 19.
