Just Back From Vancouver, Diana Krall Tammy Kennedy 'I like to take the little water taxis to Granville Island. There's a marketplace there with the freshest seafood in town'

OCCUPATION Jazz singer
HOME BASE New York City
FROM THE HEART Along with her husband, Elvis Costello, Krall recently traveled to Vancouver, the city she grew up in, to perform at a benefit to raise money for bone-marrow transplant research. The cause is a personal one: her mother, Adella, died of multiple myeloma in 2002. "We did the concert in her honor."
HELPING HAND Krall is known for her moody interpretations of jazz standards, but she takes a different creative direction on her latest album, The Girl in the Other Room (Verve). In addition to tracks by Tom Waits and others, the CD features original songs co-written with Costello. "I had a lot of help from Elvis, who probably understands what I need to say better than I do." She wrote pages of reminiscences, which he helped turn into lyrics. For the song "Departure Bay," she started with a list of things she loves about Vancouver—"sounds of a seaplane, images of a tugboat—they seem exotic, now that I've been away."
MUSEUM MILE Whenever she's in town, she takes time to see the work of local artists. "Lately I've been rediscovering all sorts of things about home, like west coast Canadian aboriginal art—it has an intense spirituality."
SWEET TOOTH "I always bring back chocolates from Purdy's [2777 Kingsway; 888/478-7397; www.purdys.com]. I've had them since I was a kid."

Krall's favorite hotel in Vancouver Fairmont Hotel—"where my parents spent their honeymoon."
