Old Fadama (Agbogbloshie)

Spanning approximately four acres of decrepit wetlands just beyond Accra city limits, the slum of Old Fadama—also known as Agbogbloshie—is home to some 40,000 struggling Ghanaians. This seriously deprived, but also inspiringly innovative community is known better as the dumping ground for hazardous environmental waste, but has recently become a destination for travelers looking to experience another walk of life. Harsh living conditions and high crime rates make this a difficult place to live, but visitors can bear witness to and interact with the industrial locals who live off of the repurposed and reclaimed electronics often discarded at this site in an effort to create a better, more stable life.

Practical Info

Old Fadama sits on the Korle Lagoon, northwest of Accra’s Central Business District. While it is possible to visit Old Fadama alone, small guided tours that insure the safety and comfort of travelers are available for a nominal fee.
