Falkland Islands

Most people know the Falkland Islands thanks to the 1980s armed conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The Islands are about much more than their recent history however. Located in the South Atlantic Ocean about 300 miles off the coast of South America, the Island chain is actually an archipelago comprising more than 700 islands.

Most visitors to the islands arrive during the warmer Austral summer either by cruise ship or plane. Cruise ship passengers don’t typically stay the night, but rather stop for a day visit to explore the boggy terrain of the main islands. There are several bed and breakfasts available to visitors who want to spend more than a few hours on the island. For the true adventurers, it is also possible to camp on the Falkland Islands, although reservations must be made in advance.
