Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve

Unlike many of Hong Kong’s country parks, popular destinations for outdoor recreation and barbecues, Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve keeps Mother Nature front and center. Occupying 1,137 acres (460 hectares) of forested area, Tai Po Kau represents Hong Kong’s most extensive woodlands and is home to more than 100 species of trees, as well as insects, amphibians and birds. Among birdwatchers and naturalists, it’s considered one of the best places in Hong Kong for spotting rare bird and insect species.
Five trails wind through the reserve, with only a few signs and picnic areas as evidence of human interference. Walking through the reserve is akin to stepping back in time to witness what Hong Kong looked like originally, long before the forest of skyscrapers took over the skyline.

Practical Info

Reach Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve by taking a green mini-bus or KMB bus to Tsung Tsai Yuen bus stop. If you’re hoping for a quiet walk, avoid visiting on Sundays and holidays.
