Mahalakshmi Temple

Built in 1785, Mahalakshmi Temple in Mumbai honors the goddess of wealth and has become of the city’s busiest and most famous places of worship. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims from around India and the world visit the temple each day, with visitor numbers surging into the hundreds of thousands during the nine-day Navaratra festival.According to local legend, the temple was built to house three idols recovered from the sea by a British engineer overseeing a project meant to connect Malabar Hill with Worli. As the story goes, the Goddess Mahalakshmi visited the engineer in a dream and told him to find the idols and place them in a temple built in her honor.
