Mt Batukaru

A majority of visitors climbing Bali’s peaks head to the more famous Mt Batur or Mt Agung, but in doing so they’re missing out on one of the most interesting rainforest treks on the island: Mt Batukaru. This extinct volcano — the second highest mountain in Bali — is cloaked in rain forest and largely isolated. With a limited number of trekkers permitted each day, it’s rare to see other hikers along the trail. What visitors sometimes do see during the hike to the peak are deer, ant eaters, butterflies, macaques and Asian palm civet (the animal responsible for the world’s most expensive coffee).
At the top of Mt Batukaru sits the largest crater on the island, while Batukaru Temple, one of Bali’s six sacred directional temples, sits at the base and is much quieter than some of the island’s more easily accessible temples.

Practical Info

Trekking Mt. Batukaru is challenging and requires a high level of physical fitness. It’s also recommended to go with a guide.
