Explore a Lost World

Along Bermuda’s south coast, the Southlands Estate includes 37 acres of wooded land that were owned by the Dunscombe family in the 1700s. They used the land as a quarry, harvesting limestone for more than a century, but also collected and planted exotic trees. Even today, Southlands remains home to some of the island’s most beautiful and exotic trees, including a sprawling grove of banyan trees and unusual cannonball trees, their trunks laden with projectile-like fruits. The fruit trees found here include tangerine, mango and papaya. Scattered ruins can be found across Southlands, which runs all the way down to the sea and a rugged beach, including the original Dunscombe house and a mausoleum.
