Westminster Abbey has long been the worshiping place for kings and queens, and it has a long and rich history. Since 1066, Westminster Abbey been the coronation church - 38 kings and queens of England have been crowned here. Queen Elizabeth II was married here, Princess Diana's funeral was held here. And 17 monarchs are buried here. The abbey is full of art and monuments to soldiers, statesmen, artists and poets including Shakespeare and Charles Dickens.

Benedictine monks established the site as a monastery in 960 and the current majestic and beautiful Gothic abbey was built in 1245. The College Garden is around 1,000 years old, possible the oldest garden in England.

Practical Info

Westminster Abbey is close to the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. The nearest tube stations are St James's Park and Westminster. You can explore Westminster Abbey alone, with an audio guide, or on a verger-led tour. Evensong is held every day except Wednesday and the Abbey Choir sings 5pm weekdays, 3pm weekends.
