Corfu Town

Corfu Town, also known as Kerkyra, is the capital of the Greek island of Corfu. The city has been important for more than a thousand years and its old town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage site list in 2007. With a population of around 30,000, Corfu town features more than 30 Greek churches, three forts and two major castles. The forts were used for more than 400 years to defend the Republic of Venice from the Ottoman Empire, but were most recently rebuilt by the British in the 19th century.
Due to the strong Venetian influence over time, Corfu feels a lot like an Italian town. The old town, which was once surrounded by fortifications, is a labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets. The town square known as the Spianada (or Esplanade) is the largest square in all of Greece and is the liveliest part of town. The Spianada is also a popular destination for visitors, with a variety of upscale restaurants and bistros.  Other sights to see in and around Corfu town include the Archaeological Museum of Corfu, the Palaiopolis Archeological Site, the Mon Repos Palace, Corfuterra Gallery, the British Cemetery and the Old Fortress.

Practical Info

Corfu city is the transportation hub for the island and you can get almost anywhere else on the island by bus. Look for the blue bus station, about a 15 minute walk from either the port or the airport. Get around the city by walking or by bicycle using the city’s bike sharing program.
