Filerimos Hill

Affording a breathtaking panorama over Rhodes island, the grassy peak of Filerimos Hill makes a popular side trip from the city and hosts an array of impressive archeological sites, including ruins from part of the ancient city of lalyssos and a number of religious buildings.
The leading attraction of Filerimos is the Monastery of Panagia Filerimos, a 15th century Gothic style building, built by the Knights of Saint John around the site of a former 5th century Byzantine monastery. From here, the Path of Golgotha chronicles the biblical events of Jesus’ crucifixion and leads pilgrims through the 14 Stations of the Cross, where events are depicted by bronze plaques, to an 18-meter concrete cross that stands poignantly at the top of the hill. The cross is not only a significant religious monument, but a tourist attraction in its own right – climbing the narrow stairwell inside the cross affords a unique perspective from its viewing windows and at nightfall, the illuminated cross can be seen for miles around.
Other attractions of Filerimos include the church of the Virgin Mary, adorned with a series of centuries-old frescos, the ancient ruins of a Doric fountain-house and the foundations of the temple of Zeus and Athena Polias.
