Otternes

TIME : 2016/2/18 23:01:56

This restored hamlet perches high above the fjord, between Flåm and Aurland. The 27 scattered buildings, the oldest dating from the early 17th century, were lived in until the 1990s. It's largely the initiative of one person, the ebullient Laila Kvellestad. Follow her half- to one-hour guided tour (in English, four times daily) of the houses and working farm. Plan too a rest break to lick a locally made organic ice cream, sip fresh apple juice or eat pancakes.

If you are staying nearby, book for one of the traditional dinners , where you can sample dishes like rømmegrøt, a rich sour-cream porridge served with thin shavings of locally cured meat and sometimes featuring organic lamb from these very hillsides.
