Tatra Mountains Museum

Dr. Tytus Chalubinski was a Polish physician who first established Zakopane as a health resort during the nineteenth century. He was also a known admirer of the culture and folklore of the local people living in the Tatra Mountains. In 1888, a group of the doctor’s friends founded The Tatra Mountains Museum in his honor.
The collections at the Tatra Mountains Museum cover a range of topics, from natural history and ethnography to Tatra art from the early nineteenth century. The oldest items in the collection are the 400-plus taxidermy birds and mammals, as well as Tytus Chalubinski’s moss herbarium and a set of Tatra rocks. The collection has since expanded to include more than 70,000 items that showcase the natural and cultural history of the Tatra Mountains.
