First

First is a summit at roughly 2,200 meters above sea level near Grindelwald and Interlaken in Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland region. It’s most well known for being a popular hiking and skiing area, as well as for having a stunning alpine panorama surrounding it. One of the best views can be enjoyed around the idyllic Bachalpsee. The little mountain lake is enclosed by flowering alpine meadows and reflects the majestic peak of the snow-capped Schreckhorn in the blue waters.
During winter, First is part of the huge Jungfrau Ski Region and transforms into a winter sport paradise with several slopes connecting to and from the peak. In summer, a network of trails offer great views of some of Switzerland’s most famous mountains: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. At the gondola station, the First Mountain Restaurant feeds hungry hikers, climbers and skiers with hearty meals. The restaurant includes a panorama terrace, where you can relax and enjoy views of the Eiger North Face, the highest north face in the Alps and location of quite a few climbing feats and accidents. Open almost year round – weather permitting – is the First Flyer. Up to four people can strap into harnesses at the same time, wiz down 800 meters of steel cable at 84 kilometers per hour and experience pure thrill. It’s a highlight for all those in need of an adrenaline rush.

Practical Info

It’s easy to get to the top of First by taking the gondola located in the Grindelwald village center. The gondola will pass two intermediate stations, Bort and Schreckfeld, before arriving at First. The operating hours of the gondola depend on the time of year, but it opens as early as 8am and makes the last descent as late as 18:30 at the height of summer. Before you head out, make sure to check the timetable so you don’t miss your ride back into the valley.
