Blue Hole National Monument

By now, we’re all familiar with the Blue Hole and the sights and wonders that magnificent enigma contains. Without a doubt, it is all that it’s been made out to be. What a lot of us may not realize is that, from a geographic and biodiversity perspective, there’s far more to it than what we’ve seen from aerial photos online.

The Blue Hole World Heritage Site and Visitor’s Center is one of those places that you have to see to believe. Located on the Half Moon Caye some 40 miles southeast of Belize City, the site has a number of key amenities that you’d expect to find at a mainland resort – from covered picnic areas to bungalows, and even a wide assortment of paddleboards and kayaks – not to mention a staffed museum and concession area stocked full of souvenirs. A short stroll down the interpretive path will lead you to the habitat of the red-footed boobies…certainly one of the highlights of the hiatus.
