Fernandina Island

Fernandina Island

The unique island of Fernandina is found on the west side of Isla Isabela, and is one of the least visited islands in the Galapagos. Its active volcanic state makes the island scarce of vegetation, and the scenery is almost surreal. However, Fernandina is home to an impressive colony of marine iguanas, as well as Galapagos penguins and cormorants. Follow the Lands End trail to experience the distinctive environment and even see a colony of sea lions on the waterline.

Visitors to Fernandina can actually see the history of the island as made by the earth in the lava fields. Though visitors cannot walk on the tenuous material, as it filled with cracks and fissures, you can experience the surreal landscape from a clear path. Be sure to take advantage of this exceptional island and all the sights it has to offer.

Practical Info

The Galapagos Islands can be difficult to reach, but there is an airport on Santa Cruz. The Isla Baltra Airport, out of Puerto Ayora, is serviced by flights to and from Quito and Guayaquil. To get to Fernandina Island, look into the various boat services out of Santa Cruz or Isabela, ranging from private yachts to group wilderness tours.
