The 3 best experiences to have from a helicopter in the South Island of New Zealand

Most people, when they hear of helicopter experiences in the Southern Lakes region of New Zealand, automatically think of heli-skiing. There is no doubt that heli-skiing tops our list of things to do from a helicopter, but there is oh-so-much-more to experience from the air. Here are some ideas.

Helicopter in NZ

For example, did you know that some of the best fly fishing in New Zealand, if not the world, is to be had in Central Otago? With the ability to fly into terrain that is usually inaccessible, helicopters are by far the best way to make your way to somewhere stunningly remote. The rivers around Queenstown and Wanaka are packed with trout and salmon and there is no doubt that you will come back with a full ‘chilly bin’. If you don’t know what that means then you had better make your way to NZ to find out!

View from the helicopter

The fun doesn’t stop there however, what about heli-biking? Take the easy way up via chopper and save your legs for the downhill excitement to follow. There are a number of locations around Wanaka and Queenstown that provide more than just spectacular views. You will ride through high country stations on the way down, whilst always feeling that you are about to launch into one of the beautiful blue lakes below you.

Lovely view

If you have always wanted to fly a helicopter, then Wanaka might just be the best place to experience it. Take off from Wanaka airport (your instructor will take care of this part) and cruise over the lakes and rivers surrounding the town. You will have a top instructor to teach you the ropes, so no need to worry about that side of things. A fabulous trip for a sunny day, the views will leave you speechless, but you will never be able to stop talking about the flying!
