Udaipur Food and Dining Guide - Restaurants, where to eat, and more

TIME : 2016/2/24 11:58:51
While Udaipur is not as high profile for its eating as Madras or Mumbai, this is India, and it still has great food. There are curries galore in any and every bazaar that can be had for a snip and at any heat, right up to the swankiest restaurants amid the picturesque Lake Pichola.

For food of the region, the so-called thali restaurants are the best bet, where you get to dine on all-you-can-eat Rajasthani dishes. They are heavy on roti, savory goodies and vegetables. Udaipur is also known for its spicy snacks, known as mirchi bada, so be careful when in the bazaars if you're not a fan of boiling hot chilli.

Restaurants are a mixture of Asian and Western, with Indian and Chinese being the most popular eats, while the lakeshore has the highest quality food.

Lake Pichola shore

You will find swanky restaurants through to airy eateries along this popular lakeshore, which is right in town. One of the most popular restaurants is Ambrai, which sits right at water level near the City Palace Museum. The best option for getting here is by rickshaw.

Lake Palace Road and surrounds

Lake Palace Road and the nearby streets of Jagdish Temple Road and Lal Ghat are the best places for fine dining. One of the best hotels in Udaipur is the restaurant within the Lake Palace Hotel, which resides on nearby Jagniwas Island. Multi-course meals are excellent yet relatively expensive.

Ganjaur Ghat

For market dining at stalls and standard sit down restaurants, the bazaars of the eastern part of Ganjaur Ghat are a must. There are several bars and long streets with markets that start from the Clock Tower and radiate outward. This area is also one of the best for shopping.

It is best to dine here at night when the city and lake palaces are lit up. Traditional Rajasthan dishes are exquisite but be sure to arrive early.
