Bali Ferry Tariffs Increase

Sea travel is the principle form of transport for most of Indonesia’s 246,000,000 people. The country is the world's largest archipelago with over 17,000 islands and numerous ports across the islands. Passengers from Bali board ships in Benoa Harbour, near the new Bali Mandara Toll Road.

Tickets

Tickets must be booked in advance through a ticket office located in or nearby the harbour. There is one near the traffic intersection of Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai after the turn-off to Benoa. Unless it is a peak travel time, tickets are available up to and including the day of departure. Cabin accommodation sells out quickly, and should be booked in advance.

PELNI Ferries

Indonesia's national shipping company, PELNI, is government-owned and operated. Ferries travel the entire archipelago, east-to-west and north-to-south. Each ship completes a voyage to several ports over a two-week period. At the end of the fortnight, ships return to their original port of departure, and the circuit starts again. PELNI ferries are mostly built in Germany, and can carry up to 5,000 passengers each. Livestock and cargo are also transported. There are six classes of accommodation; to book a higher class cabin, make reservations in advance or you could end up dossing on the deck.

Pelni ships are slow and travellers should expect to spend several days on board. Make sure to check the length of time for the trip.

The manager of inter-island ferries at Bali's westernmost port ASDP Pelabuhan Gilimanuk, Wahyudi Susianto, dismissed the idea that the increase in ferry tariffs is connected to the possibility of a hike in fuel prices, but was made necessary to cover operating costs - including both fuel and maintenance of ships operating between the islands.

Please note that these fares are for passage on the large Government PELNI ferries, and have no relevance to fares on “fast boats” between Bali and Lombok-Gili Islands, nor to Nusa Penida and Lembongan.
