Christmas eve bbq is Bali

toby's armpitsChristmas eve saw my bbq get it’s first outing for a long time. Toby was the real motivator on that front, bringing small bottles of Belizean rum and Belizean spices, plus habanero hot sauce. Inviting a few people for 5pm, we were slow getting started, as traffic and shoppers slowed our progress. Bintang supermarket was like a sauna, with carts of food backed up. Toby went home to check on his his daughter, but luckily for me, I still had the Kijang from our recent trip to the mountains. Incidentally, I tried to return the vehicle after 2 days, to the place on Jl. Benesari, were we rented it. A combination of roadworks, cops with baracades and Balinese ceremonies, meant I spent an hour trying to get from Seminyak, to Jl. Benesari, ultimately being directed around Kuta in a circle, then back onto the Sunset Rd heading north! Oh well, some things happen for a reason, and handing back the car wasn’t supposed to happen.

terry & ollieMy motorbike spent the last 4 days outside Suka Beach guest house, fortunately there were so many bikes, mine did not stand out and the helmet was still there. For this bbq we picked up chicken legs and thighs, sausages and steak. Salad items plus rice and grilled corn went down well too. Toby was a star, hand mixing chicken with the bright orange ‘Indian-like’ sauce. He made me delicious drinks (rum, ice, ginger ale) and knocked out some homemade tortillas, which when filled with chicken, salad and habanero sauce, hit the spot! Next time I’ll figure out a way to get fresh fish back to my house from Jimbaran Bay. I’ve done it before on my bike, but keeping the stuff cold is a problem. Present at the party were Ika and family, Palu and family of 6, Ollie from Oregon, Asia, Toby & Maya and Terry from Melbourne.

It was a shame Rod (his shadow) couldn’t make it this time, but there’s plenty of charcoal for next time. We’ll get it fired up again before Toby leaves, and Baliblog readers are welcome.
