One of the classic images of Nikko is the beautiful vermilion arch of Shinkyo Bridge. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site in Nikko, and belongs to the Futarasan Shrine. The current bridge was built in 1636 and underwent major renovation in the early 2000’s. However, there has been a bridge on the site throughout recorded history. Originally it was only open to the highest levels of nobility, but after the renovation it is open for the general public to cross.

When you visit, enjoy the crystal clear river running under Shinkyo Bridge and the peaceful forest around it. But also notice the unusual support beams which are shaped like the torii gates designating sacred areas of a shrine.
