Explore activities beyond the waterfalls

Breathtaking cascades of water make the Kuang Si Waterfalls one of Luang Prabang’s most popular tourist attractions around. The journey from the Luang Prabang World Heritage Town out to the waterfalls is well worth your time as you will discover vistas of rice fields and pass through local villages along the way. You may even get the opportunity to exchange greetings with a few friendly local Lao or Hmong people along the way.

While the spectacular azure pools are stunning to swim in when you visit Kuang Si, however, you should really consider the surrounding opportunities before heading back to the Luang Prabang city center!

The Bear Rescue Center

As you first enter the park, you will find yourself nearby the Free the Bears Rescue Center. The Free The Bears initiative began as a way to help save Asian bears in the Lao PDR from becoming poached or illegally traded throughout the Southeast Asian region. According to their website, the Tad Kuang Si Waterfall location is home to a total of 23 rescued bears. You can observe all of these bears freely roaming around in their comfortable habitat at the Kuang Si Waterfall park. We recommend viewing the big bears during their lunch time. This is when they are the most active, climbing up trees and all over their spacious playground.

The Butterfly Park

Before leaving the Kuang Si Waterfalls, make your way down to the nearby Butterfly Park! If you made the journey out to the falls, then this nearby park is one attraction that should not be missed. Situated only 300 meters before the entrance to Kuang Si, the Butterfly Park is the first butterfly conservation and exhibit of its kind in Luang Prabang. It was recently initiated in early 2014 with the mission to create a research center for studying and publishing information on butterflies found across Laos, the conservation of plants, and environmental issues in the country. It has one of the biggest butterfly exhibits that we have come across, including a small freshwater pool where you can get a free pedicure from tiny fish that will nibble on your feet!

This expansive botanical park is also home to a café situated right next to a quiet pond. It is a great way to finish your day with a strong cup of Dutch coffee and a delicious baguette in a beautiful surrounding. The Butterfly Park will be adding more menu items in the near future, including a special homemade Dutch dessert!
