Water, Water, Everywhere . . . Songkran Photos

TIME : 2016/2/24 18:32:04

It’s that time of year in Thailand when water fills the air and everybody gets very wet as part of the Songkran Festival which welcomes in the traditional Thai New Year. The custom of pouring water is a symbolic way of cleansing all the bad luck and wrongdoing of the previous year and providing a clean slate for the new year ahead. It might not seem it, but getting a good soaking is meant to be good luck. In many towns and cities throughout Thailand one of the most anticipated aspects of the Songkran Festival is the annual parading of important Buddha images from local temples. Crowds of Thais line the streets to make-merit and throw water at the Buddha figures. If you are in Thailand at the moment I hope you are enjoying the festivities, but if you aren’t in Thailand hopefully these photos will give you some idea of what you are missing out on!
