Biking Tasmania – top 4 routes

Tasmania has some of the best biking routes in the world. From 50-minute jaunts to seven-day rides here we showcase the top four

1. Montezuma Falls, west coast

Time: 50 minutes to 2.5 hours

A muddy, tear-away, hooligan ride through rainforest, with a couple of challenging creek-crossings. You cross a narrow suspension bridge – pure Indiana Jones – just below Montezuma Falls (at 104m, the highest in Tassie). Since it follows an old railway line, this ride is not too steep. 25km, but finishes with a great 6km downhill.

2. Friendly Beaches, Freycinet Peninsula

Time: Half- or full-day rides

Follow a network of 4WD and fire trails through sandy oceanside bush. You can take a dip at the southern end of Friendly Beaches during your ride. Start and finish at Coles Bay; it’s impossible to get lost – this is a narrow strip of land between the road and the ocean.

3. Trevallyn Dam, near Launceston

Time: Half-day rides

There is a huge mountain-bike loving population in the north of the state who use this area, with cross-country trails for all riders, so there are always friendly people around to ride with. There are great views, and you can finish with a downhill in Launceston via Cataract Gorge.

4. Tasmanian Trail

Time: Seven to eight days, or divide into one to three-day stages

You can ride for a week on this 480km trail and not see another person between Devonport and Dover, if you choose to camp, through there’s accommodation along the way. There are no guided tours yet; it’s long and tough, with muddy parts and some road sections.
