dsc03984.JPGIf you are going to fly all the way to Australia, do try and make some time to see Kangaroo Island. It may not be on the main tourist path but it is well worth your hard earned Travel time and dollars. Everyone I know that has gone there completely agrees. The island is an amazing piece of the Australian wilderness, with over a third of the landmass reserved as conservation purposes. But How to get there?

By Air- REX- Regional Express, operated by Qantas, operates from Adelaide to Kingscote Airport (KGC) 13 17 13 or 08 8553 2938.

The airport is located 13 KM from the Island’s Capital. Shuttle transport is available but bookings are needed. 08 8553 2390.

While you certainly can fly in, most people take the ferry. You can either take a coach tour booked through a hostel or hotel, take the Sealink Coach to the Ferry, or drive yourself to the ferry which then gives you the freedom to have a car available to you on the island.

The Sealink Ferry runs from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw with at least 4 departures daily and more during peak season. The trip takes about 45 minutes. Make sure you are there at least 30 minutes before departure if you are driving. There is a cafe on board.

If you are catching a Sealink Coach from Adelaide- there are two times you will need to leave- either 6:45 am or 3:45 pm. 13 13 01

A travellers hint: I heard from several people, that the “day tours” that are widely advertised in all of the hostels and hotels to Kangaroo Island are do-able, but exhausting. Know you will be up and moving from around 6:00 am to 11:00 pm. With most of it spent riding on a bus. Most people I spoke to that had done that option were glad they experienced Kangaroo Island but wished they had taken the overnight option.

From MelbourneTravellink offers the Costal Explorer or the Country Lovers Way bus fare. On your way there, you can visit the Coonawarra, Mclaren Vale, and the Great Ocean Road, as just a few of the options. 1300 655 9900. You can contact them for a free road map and accommodation/attraction guide covering their routes.
