dsc00154-1.JPGWhat a beautiful spot. Totally quiet and picturesque- this hill top winery in the New England country side of NSW is a definite must do if you are in the region.

The property is a family legacy. Generations of the Reid family have lived on the land and added their mark to the house renovations. The tasting room is now in what was known as the nanny’s room. The wines- like the land are a living family tree. The white wines are named in honor of the historical matriarchs of the family, and reds after the literal forefathers.

Cool climate wines, they do tend to be a bit on the sweet side- but are completely enjoyable. The whites are absolutely perfect for the hot Aussie summers. I bought nearly a mixed case and took them to some unsuspecting friends of mine at a gathering in Byron. The Doctors Nose wines were all extremely well received.

Ranging in price from around $11-$16 they are reasonably priced. The host and hostess of the winery are friendly, knowledgeable, welcoming, and active in the community. The tasting room is attached to a beautiful covered patio that overlooks the valley. A lovely spot to bring a picnic lunch along and share in a bottle of their wares. About 5 K to the North and east of town just off the Bruxner Highway to Lismore – there are plenty of signs.

Also of note in the area are Deetswood Winery. The wines were a nice variety ranging from dry to sweet and they offered a scrumptious port. The hostess was friendly even though I turned up minutes before closing time. dsc00153.JPG They are a little difficult to find- go north from town, left on Cowper Street (New England Highway) and then right on Pelham Street- across from the Golf Motel signs. Follow Pelham for about 2.5 K’s. the winery is around the back of the house. It sounds a bit funny- but it is a professional tasting room. They are working on getting better signage. Their ’03 Platypus Red blend received cries of delight from my girlfriends. Definitely worth a stop.

I was not able to stop at Kurrajong Winery- but heard good things about it. I think they are only open Thursday- Sunday. On the Bruxner Highway to Lismore
