Hollywood Movies, Massive Volcanoes, Extreme Tours and Nice Warm Pools...

Year in Review 2014

It's the end of the year 2014, and it's been quite a year. It's an age old tradition in Iceland (and other places, I suppose?) to go over the year that has passed and review it, see what was good and what could be done better. In this spirit we present our most popular travel articles of 2014.

We try to do a balanced coverage of Iceland between news, helpful travel tips and general Iceland information, as well as a good balance between highly popular options and more obscure local secrets.

We started the year off on an exciting note with a list of the Top 10 most extreme things to do in Iceland (with videos of everything from snowmobiles to paragliding to scuba diving)- a review of the most adrenaline-packed tour options for a traveler in the country, while we ended the year with the more general interest Iceland DIY - How to drive the Golden Circle and a guide for Where to Go, What to Do and How to Get There. In the realm of general interest, we also published an article about Animals in Iceland (or Lack Thereof..), which tells you about some uniquely Icelandic animals while poking fun of how many 'ordinary' species we don't have...

For extreme things you can do on the Golden Circle there is, for instance, Snowmobiling on Langjökull Glacier...

Hollywood loves Iceland, thinks it looks like space....

There were a lot of big Hollywood movies filmed partially or wholly in Iceland recently, so much that we did two articles of coverage, clips, behind-the-scenes and driving instructions to shooting locations: the 5 Famous Movie Locations you can visit RIGHT NOW!, with movies such as Thor 2, Noah and the Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and the 5 Upcoming Major Hollywood Movies Shot in Iceland, including pieces like Star Wars Episode VII, Interstellar and Jupiter Ascending.

There were some major Hollywood movies that were filmed in Iceland recently, and some really big name actors that were here to film them...

Badabing-Bárðarbunga-BadaBOOM

At the end of the summer, Bárðarbunga Volcano in the east of Iceland started rumbling and making noise, and then erupting quite spectacularly. We gave you a status report with stern warnings not to try to approach it under pain of death or hefty fines, while you could actually fly over it easily and safely enough.

Just to update you once again, it is still going, you still shouldn't go near it, but you can still fly over it. The volcano has now emitted the largest amount of lava on earth since the 1783 eruption of Laki, another volcano about 50 kilometers to the north of this one, which probably belongs to the same volcano system. We'll let you know when it stops.

Pools, Pools and More Pools

Finally, we decided geothermal pools are a quite popular thing in Iceland, so we wrote the more mainstream How, where and when to get wet in Reykjavík, and the more obscure 10 Iceland Hot Springs that Aren't the Blue Lagoon - which includes driving instructions and helpful maps. Between them, you should have no shortage of hot springs and public pools to see on your next visit to Iceland.

And that rounds off the year for us here at My Destination Reykjavik, thank you for sticking with us so far, and we look forward to doing even better and providing even more information to you in the coming year. As we say in Iceland, 'Merry Christmas and happy coming year!!'
