Go now! Top trips to take this month

Whisk yourself away like a leaf on an autumn breeze with one of these four last-minute trips!

1. London

Capitalise on the Olympic legacy

Why go? Once the Olympic crowds have left, there’s still plenty going on in the Big Smoke. Ride the Emirates Air Line cable car over the Thames for great views. And, from 22-23 Sept, glimpse inside buildings normally closed to the public during the London Open House weekend.

Where to stay: Boutique CitizenM is on the Southbank near The Shard, Europe’s tallest building; doubles from £150. Safestay hostel in Elephant & Castle has stylish dorms from £18.

Getting there: Planes, train or automobile – take your pick.

2. Gran Canaria

Walk on the wild side

Why go? Julia Donaldson described Gran Canaria as a land of ‘fiery mountains and golden sands’; discover this for yourself at the island’s annual Walking Festival (15-22 Sept). Five routes take in pre-Hispanic cattle trails, volcanic craters, vineyards and more. Groups are limited to 25 people, distances range from 8km to 15km. A five-walk package including lunches costs €250pp; single walks from €16. Register at www.grancanariawalkingfestival.es.

Where to stay: Casa Cueva Las Margaritas is a beautifully restored cave house in Artenara with great views; from €78 a night.

Getting there: easyJet flies to Las Palmas from around £298 rtn.

3. Kiev, Ukraine

No more Euros but still open for business

Why go? Now the football’s over, take advantage of Ukraine’s Euros-improved infrastructure without the crowds. Kiev, one of Europe’s oldest cities, is steeped in culture. Go to St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, a working monastery rebuilt after the Soviet collapse, then relax on the beaches beside the Dnieper River at Hidropark Island.

Where to stay: For luxury, head to Boutique Hotel Riviera; doubles from €275. Sunflower B&B is better for those on a budget; doubles from €105.

Getting there: BA flies Heathrow-Kiev from £225 rtn. Wizz Air flies Luton-Kiev.

4. Iceland

Ride in a Réttir

Why go? Saddle up and marvel as free-grazing Icelandic horses and sheep are herded down to winter pastures. This annual tradition – the Réttir – dates back to Iceland’s original Viking settlers. It takes place every September and is best experienced in the country’s north-west. You’ll need to be an experienced rider to help out.

Where to stay: Stay on local farms – check out www.farmholidays.is. The Farmers Association of Iceland publishes info on round-ups in different regions (www.bondi.is/english).

Getting there: Icelandair flies to Reykjavík from £248 rtn. Discover the World runs riding trips from £1,074pp.
