Where to stay in Maui – an island guide to the best accommodation

TIME : 2016/2/24 11:52:08

Maui lives up to stereotypes of paradisiac beaches, spectacular scenery and world class surfing. That’s not to forget its world-renowned locavore food scene, and traditional Hawaiian luaus. Choose between sleepy, rural towns surrounded by secret beaches, tourist centers lined with 19th century historic buildings, or luxurious ocean front resorts for five star treatment.

Lahaina

Lahaina is an old whaling port, and today is famous as Maui’s center for great food and buzzing nightlife. At the middle of the town is the famous Banyan Tree, while sprawling around it are clusters of 19th century buildings and historic shops, like the Old Lahaina Book Emporium.

Hotels in Lahaina

Stay in a historic bed and breakfast located in the center of the town, or travel a little further afield for a beach front condo or stylish resort hotel with lavish rooms and all the latest facilities.

Kahului

Kahului is Maui’s largest town. The airport is situated here, and while a lot of the rural spirit of the island is absent, there are plenty of amenities, and even a spot of culture – including the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, where you can find local art exhibitions and plays.

Hotels in Kahului

Kahului tends to act as a stop off point for those entering and leaving the area. Hotels are of the budget variety, with clean, comfortable rooms available. Most are located between the town and airport; with some blessed by beachfront locations.

Kaanapali

A small resort on the West Maui coast, Kaanapali is located close to Lahaina. It’s also one of Haiwaii’s top tourist destinations. Discover historic relics from the days of the sugar trade like the Sugar Cane Train, next to modern-day luxury attractions like Whaler’s Village, a popular oceanfront shopping complex.

Hotels in Kaanapali

In Kaanapali you can find stylish up-market resorts with plush rooms and beach front locations. Elegant hotels, private condos and apartment rentals stretch along this scenic part of coastline.

Hana

Hana is tucked away on the southeast end of Maui, a hidden enclave of the island. Exposed to more wind than the rest of the island, Hana’s climate nourishes lush rainforest. Swim in nearby sheltered lagoons blessed with scenic waterfalls, or wander along the Waianapanapa State Beach, which is located nearby and has stunning black sands.

Accommodation here takes the well-loved form of beach-front condos and apartments. Alternatively, stay in a quirky house rental, like the Lilikoi Jungle Cottage, which is situated in the midst of peaceful rainforest.
