When it comes to shopping, ‘Big Island’ in the Hawaiian archipelago would most likely not be the first location you would think of. However, there are a range of options should you wish to part with your cash. Forget large-scale American malls however; part of the island’s charm lies in its one-of-a-kind stores and island-style attire.

Ali’i Drive

Found in Kailua-Kona in the Kona district of the island, Ali’I drive offers over 65 shops in which to have a browse and kill an hour or two. There are plenty of gift shops here, so if you’re looking to find that perfect present you’ve come to the right place. The real draws however, are the local markets (particularly the ‘Ali’I Gardens Marketplace’) which sell a variety of products, trinkets and souvenirs including the signature ‘lei’ (flower necklace). Most of these are located on the southern part of Ali’I drive. They tend to be open from 9am – 9pm daily.

Queen’s Marketplace

Located in the island’s resort area of Waikoloa Beach, ‘Queen’s’ is one of the island’s most popular locations in which to shop for locals and tourists alike. With a wide selection of stores, art galleries, restaurants and activity outlets (including a Koi pond and numerous cultural classes) on its premises, ‘Queen’s’ provides the ideal location in which to have a wonder and a browse. There’s even an outdoor cinema here. It is open from 9.30am until 9.30pm daily.

Holualoa Village

Nestled 1300 feet high above the town of Kailua-Kona amongst the slopes of Hualalai, ‘Holualoa Village’ is a destination waiting to be explored. Essentially a quaint village, Holualoa has become famous due to its coffee cultivation, art galleries, studios, and top of the range local stores – all housed in buildings which date back to the early 1800’s. The area is a MUST for any tourist, if only to sample the rich culture and delicious coffee found here. Opening hours: Tue-Sat: 10am – 5pm.

Prince Kuhio Plaza

As the island’s largest enclosed shopping center, the Prince Kuhio Plaza is the perfect place to come and enjoy the best of American retail. With food courts, a nine screen movie theatre, sports stores, Sears and Macey’s, you won’t be hard pressed to amuse yourself for a couple of hours. The center is open from 10am – 8pm (Mon – Thurs), 10am – 9pm (Fri and Sat) and 10am – 6pm (Sun).
