Put all your preconceived notions to bed right now. Just because this Las Vegas show is called Menopause does not mean it’s reserved for women only. Admittedly, this is not a show for kids (you have to be 18 to get in), but women who have “gone through the change” or are experiencing it right now as well as the men who have, by default, also experienced menopause will laugh their way through this energetic, comedic parody about one of life’s predestined events.
Debuted in 2001 and with performances in 40 cities around the United States, Menopause the Musical is now at home at the Luxor. Set against the backdrop of popular songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s, it follows the story of four women as they navigate the ups and downs of menopause.
The show spotlights the women in solo and group performances set to parodies of songs that everyone knows. “Puff, My God I’m Draggin’” and “Stayin’ Awake, Stayin’ Awake” are two of the show’s songs, but you’ll also hear renditions of “I Heard it Through the Grapevine,” “California Girls” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It” among others. Audience members chuckle and nod, relating with the complaints of a depressed sex life, mood swings, forgetfulness and insomnia.
Menopause is highlighted differently from each character, as she brings her own back story and baggage to the table, but ultimately they realize that it ties them together and they should celebrate what it has to offer. In the final number, the four women dress in splashy gowns and sing about the empowerment and acceptance of menopause while also celebrating the opportunities that lie ahead.
For audience members going through the change themselves, don’t fear that the theater might be too warm. It’s actually comfortably cool, and you’re welcome to buy a signature Menopause fan for $1.00 before the show with all of the proceeds going to charity.
Located in the Atrium Showroom at Luxor Hotel and Casino, Menopause the Musical plays at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Monday and at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
