Many of you certainly heard about the fare sales from Southwest Airlines and a few competitors this last week, and if you were one of the many who rushed to buy a ticket then you probably got a fantastic deal. But if are still shopping, then fear not, because prices on flights to Las Vegas remain at historically low levels, even between the sales.
And in case you felt bad about not getting one of those $9 tickets, then don’t, because chances are very high that the actual flight that worked out for you wasn’t available in one of those promotions anyway. Being in the travel business it’s kind of tough to admit this, but if you really look into these fare sales, particularly some of the recent ones by JetBlue and AirTran, you see that the low fares advertised are only valid on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The idea is to get you to their website, as kind of a bait and switch, to be honest with you. You might want to fly to Vegas for an upcoming weekend so you put those dates in only to find the prices are exactly the same as they were the day before the fare sale began. If you are rich and unemployed, then maybe you could fly somewhere on a Wednesday and fly home the following Tuesday, but that 6-day trip might cost a fortune in other ways.
The good news
As mentioned in the title, you can still get great deals every day, especially if you look at Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, and AirTran, but the major airlines are often forced to match these fares, so you should also run your desired dates through kayak.com to see what the best price is.
For example, I just checked all of the sites above from Los Angeles for an upcoming weekend, and the cheapest fare was found on Kayak, with a United Airlines flight costing only $81 roundtrip. Things are so bad these days that finding amazing fares like that is pretty easy, so you don’t have to sit around waiting for these fare sales, and chances are good those won’t work for your desired dates anyway.
