Amsterdam’s New Crop of Fashionable Museum Exhibits

Fresh off a successful Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek, Amsterdam continues its celebration of style this summer by launching a series of fashion-related exhibitions. From turning back the clock to London’s Swinging Sixties scene, to a study of fashion publishing and modern body art, the city’s got you covered if you’re in need of more fashion fixes.

Swinging Sixties London

Foam, Amsterdam’s leading photography gallery, is the venue for this exploration of a decade of Space-Age style. Classic prints by the likes of Terence Donovan and Eric Swayne portray the fashions of the era, and many feature its foremost style icons, with images of Jane Birkin, Mick Jagger, Twiggy in their glory days (until September 2).

New For Now: The Origin Of Fashion Magazines

At the recently reopened Rijksmuseum, the fashion prints of decades and centuries past are the focus of this fascinating look at the beginnings of fashion publishing. Featuring more than 8,000 prints from the Rijksmuseum’s deep collection, some of them on show for the first time, the pieces go back as far as the 1600s (until September 27).

Body Art

Fashion isn’t limited to clothing, of course, and this exhibit looks at body modifications from around the world, positing why people alter their bodies. Whether it’s tribal tattoos or piercings and implants, a diverse range is under the microscope in this lively multimedia show at the city’s excellent ethnographical museum, the Tropenmuseum (until August 30).
