Temple of Isis

TIME : 2016/2/16 18:02:20

The superb Temple of Isis is arguably the finest of Sabratha's temples. Built in the 1st century AD, it faces onto the Mediterranean in keeping with its dedication to the Egyptian goddess Isis, who was seen here as a protector of sailors. Every spring a great feast was held to celebrate the start of the sailing season. The colonnaded courtyard has a row of eight Corinthian columns.

Look beyond the temple to the north and you can see part of the temple foundations that have been eroded by the sea; beyond that are parts of the city lost to the waves during the earthquake.
