Chwaka Ruins

TIME : 2016/2/17 10:52:59

Beginning about 1.5km southeast of Tumbe, spread out amid palm trees and cassava fields, are the Chwaka Ruins dating back to the 9th century. The main destination is the Haruni Site , with remnants of a town that existed from the 11th to 15th centuries and grew to perhaps 5000 people. It’s named after Harun, son of Mkame Ndume and, according to local tradition, just as cruel as his father. Legend says the pillared structure next to the semi-intact Friday Mosque is his tomb.
