Citadel

TIME : 2016/2/18 16:22:50

The Naxçivan khans were buried in a squat, brick tomb complex with a simple blue-glaze dome, now over-restored and known simply as the İmamzadə . Directly above is a large graveyard and the mudbrick walls of what was once the city’s citadel . Until recently these walls were barely visible undulations. However, a major reconstruction effort is reviving them. There’s also a brassy-spired tomb tower that was revealed by ‘2006 research’ to be the tomb of Noah . Amusingly the structure is even dated ‘VI-millennium BC’ even though it’s essentially brand new. History and myth are rarely more incongruously muddled than they are in Naxçivan.
