Sai Kung East Country Park

When you envision Hong Kong, beautiful deserted beaches might not be the first things that come to mind, but that’s just what you’ll find within Sai Kung East Country Park. Encompassing 17 square miles (45 square kilometers) on the Sai Kung Peninsula in eastern Hong Kong, the urban park boasts not one but five secluded beaches, as well as the first two stages of the MacLehose Trail.
Four of the five beaches hug the coast of Tai Long Bay (Tai Long Wan). From north to south, Tung Wan, Tai Wan, Ham Tin Wan and Sai Wan feature wide swathes of golden sand and waters that remain warm into November. A bit harder to get to but well worth the effort is Long Ke Wan, widely considered to be Hong Kong’s most beautiful beach.
Besides trekking and beach day tripping, Sai Kung East Country Park is also one of the Hong Kong area’s most popular destinations for beach camping. Both Ham Tin Wan and Long Ke beaches have official campsites, and travelers sans gear can rent sleeping bags, mats and tents at a small store in the former.
