St Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral in Kolkata is one of the most important Anglican cathedrals in India. Built in a grand Indo-Gothic style, the building replaced St. John's Church as Kolkata’s cathedral on its completion in 1847. It’s clear to see what the attraction of St. Paul’s Cathedral is for both visitors to Kolkata and its locals; the building itself is majestic and its setting is as peaceful and serene as it gets in this part of India.
The cathedral is located to the east of the Victoria Memorial and is surrounded by perfectly manicured lawns. Inside the high-vaulted interior, the sense of tranquility becomes almost palpable. Visually, the inside of the cathedral is also a treat, with its carved wooden pews, stain-glass windows and intricate artwork depicting the life and work of St. Paul.
Two natural disasters have led to several reconstructions of the cathedral over the years. The steeple fell from the building during an earthquake in 1897 and so was redesigned and rebuilt, and another earthquake in 1934 meant that the cathedral’s tower had to be reconstructed.
