The Abeno Harukas Skyscraper recently stole the coveted superlative of Japan's highest skyscraper. At 300-meters tall (984 feet), the new skyscraper narrowly rises above the former title holder, the Yokohama Landmark Tower. Owned by Japan Railway Kintetsu Corporation, the Abeno Harukas will serve as a railway terminal for Osaka's Kintetsu Minami-Osaka Line. The skyscraper is currently under construction and is expected to open in March 2014.
The name Abeno Harukas translates to a phrase meaning "to brighten, to clear up," symbolizing the unobstructed view visitors will see from the top. The behemoth skyscraper boasts over 300,000 square feet of floor space. That space will be used to house offices, commercial shops, restaurants, a hotel, a museum, a garden, and an observatory so large it will occupy three of the building's top floors.
