Gathered around the Padang Merdeka area of Kota Bharu is a cluster of excellent museums. Spend a leisurely day exploring them and you’ll be well on your way to becoming semi-expert in Malay history and culture. Nearby are good restaurants and shopping opportunities for between exhibition downtime. If you’ve only got half a day, your priority should be Istana Jahar and Istana Batu.
