The rite of heaven was performed at this altar complex during the Goryeo dynasty until 1464, and then again from 1897 when it was reestablished by King Gojong. All that remain of the previously large complex are the Hwangungu Shrine and three stone drums, which symbolise the instruments that were historically used during the ceremony.
