Yudaganawa Temple

TIME : 2016/2/17 16:05:35

A massive and ancient dagoba (stupa) lies quietly hidden in a forest clearing at Yudaganawa (compulsory ‘donation’ Rs 100), just 3km west of the little village of Buttala. Only the bottom third remains, but the setting is charming and your imagination can run riot with thoughts of how amazing it must have looked back in its day. Exactly how ancient it is is a little hard to tell due to the tradition of pilgrims adding new bricks to the now slowly regrowing dagoba! More interesting than the dagoba itself is the small building in front housing beautiful 300-year-old carved-wood Buddhas and some faded paintings (including one of Ganesh after a Weight Watchers course). It’s 1.5km from Wellawaya Rd.
