Saphan Mon

TIME : 2016/2/17 16:56:35

Sangkhlaburi's iconic, 440m wooden bridge, one of the largest in the world, connects the main town, home mostly to Thai and Karen, with the Mon settlement. Although the buildings and shops on the Mon side aren't any different from other Thai villages, the many cheroot-smoking women, sarong-wearing men and faces covered in yellow cream make it stand out.

At the Mon end of the bridge is a typical Thai souvenir market where Karen shirts and dresses are popular. Follow the street uphill from the bridge and turn left on the main road to visit the Mon market .

A 70m section of the bridge collapsed during torrential rain in 2013 and the floating bamboo bridge built right afterwards is still there, but not for long. Once it breaks up it won't be rebuilt.
