Fort Hamilton

Fort Hamilton

Located on a hilltop on the outskirts of Hamilton City, Fort Hamilton was originally built in the 1870s to protect Hamilton Harbor and defend the Western Royal Naval Dockyard.
This typical Victorian structure overlooks attractive landscaped gardens that were once a huge dry moat surrounding the fort. Today the gardens are home to a variety of tropical plantlife, birdlife, and other wildlife. There’s a narrow walking trail that leads all around the circular moat.
The setting of the fort offers spectacular views over Hamilton, especially when there are ships in port. Inside, there are a number of canons and ramparts standing guard over the harbor, despite never having been used. Long tunnels were originally dug out to serve as protected routes through which ammunition would be replenished.
