Sailing the Sound: America's Cup 2017 Comes to Bermuda

Bermuda’s maritime heritage, perfect sailing conditions, and spectacular landscape have made it a natural choice for the 2017 America’s Cup. Catamarans with wingsails designed to “fly” at nearly 50 mph will race around Bermuda’s Great Sound, which also offers a prime location for spectator viewing.

Presented by Louis Vuitton, the 35th America’s Cup sailing race will bring thousands of fans and some of the best sailors in the world to the pink sands of Bermuda. Challenger Qualifier races take place between May 26 and June 12, 2017, and the America’s Cup match will be held between June 17 and 27. The America’s Cup Village will be located at the Royal Naval Dockyard where you’ll be able to hobnob with other fans and the sailing teams.

America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in international sports. Dating to 1851, it was around before the first modern Olympic Games in Athens. Unlike the Olympic Games, America’s Cup does not have a set schedule. A race takes place when a yacht club challenges the team currently holding the cup. Oracle Team USA of the Golden Gate Yacht Club is the current defending champion. Other returning teams for 2017 include Emirates Team New Zealand, Team France, and Artemis Racing.
