Musée des Beaux

TIME : 2016/2/18 16:37:31

From outside, this museum is a 1980s concrete travesty. Within, however, clever design creates a spiral of gallery spaces ideal for viewing the excellent collection of paintings by French-speaking Belgians. The scope ranges from fine medieval canvases by Lambert Lombard and Pierre Paulus to surrealist works by Paul Delvaux. Particular strengths are century-old images of industrial Wallonia. Constantin Meunier’s La Coulée à Ougrée has an almost Soviet-realist feel, while Cécile Douard’s inspired Le Terril portrays worker women struggling up a metaphorical slag heap.
