Srebrenica Memorial Hall

TIME : 2016/2/18 16:54:40

Opposite the Srebrenica memorial is the derelict battery factory complex that formed the UN compound in 1995. The big central building is where some 5000 refugees sought refuge directly before the massacres (many more were turned away). Today this poignantly miserable hangar, with dripping roof, old tubes and odd rusting bits of broken machinery, is the setting for screening a very moving 27-minute film about the 1995 tragedy and also houses 20 potted life-stories of victims complete with a touchingly small possession.

It's a deeply moving experience made all the more intense when you are accompanied by a guide – likely someone whose own family was decimated in the events. Although the hall might be open for drop-in visitors, you are advised to write or call a day or two before, longer if you want to visit at weekends (possible by special arrangement).

If you don't want to go all the way to the actual site, Sarajevo also has its own Srebrenica memorial museum, the visually powerful Galerija 11-07-95 .
